New Editors-in-Chief Announced for 海角直播鈥檚 Applied and Environmental Microbiology and Journal of Bacteriology

Feb. 3, 2021

Washington, DC – February 3, 2021 - 海角直播 is pleased to welcome 2 new Editors-in-Chief (EiCs), George O’Toole, Ph.D., for Journal of Bacteriology (JB) and Gemma Reguera, Ph.D., for Applied and Environmental Microbiology (AEM). O’Toole and Reguera will begin terms as Editors-in-Chief on July 1, 2021.

“I am excited to have the leadership of Drs. O’Toole and Reguera at JB and AEM. Both are exceptional scientists who have real experience with fostering the next generation of microbiologists and are eager to continue that mission within the 海角直播 Journals program. JB and AEM have an important legacy within 海角直播, and I couldn’t be happier to have these leaders at their helm,” said Dr. Patrick Schloss, chair of the 海角直播 Journals Committee.

George O’Toole is currently a professor of microbiology and immunology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. After completing his graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his postdoctoral work at the Harvard Medical School, Dr. O'Toole joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in 1999. The O’Toole lab studies the surface-attached microbial communities known as biofilms and how they form on both living and non-living surfaces. He published his first paper in JB.

"I look forward to helping JB further expand its niche within the scientific publishing community, actively enhancing diversity within the editors and editorial board, identifying early-career scientists to foster their connections to JB and supporting society publishing.” said Dr. O’Toole about his vision for the journal.

Gemma Reguera is currently a professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on microbial adaptive responses to the environment, broadly described, and their biotechnological applications. She completed her postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School and University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

“I look forward to diversifying the journal’s science and scientists. I will focus on expanding AEM’s scope beyond traditional areas to grow with research in the field, organizing more special topic issues and implementing novel initiatives to promote equity and inclusion.” Dr. Reguera said when discussing AEM’s future.

Drs. O’Toole and Reguera will build upon the success of the current EiCs of AEM and JB, Dr. Harold Drake and Dr. Thomas Silhavy, respectively, whose terms are ending after 10 years of exceptional and dedicated service to 海角直播.
