Join the free, hour-long , where authors will present their recently published ® (JVI) articles and share the story behind their research with the wider academic community. Presentations are followed by an open forum panel discussion with all speakers and participants. JVI editors will moderate the sessions, including the discussion and live Q&A.

From Nucleus to Cytoplasm: Primary Envelopment in Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus

May 4, 2026 | 11 a.m. ET

In the past decade, our understanding of the nucleoplasmic reticulum (NR) has evolved to realize the contributions of the organelle in the maintenance of nuclear integrity. Also in recent years, herpesviruses have been more frequently implicated in possibly interacting with the NR to escape the nucleus during lytic reactivation.
In this Journal of Virology Seminar Series webinar, Alexa Wilson, Ph.D., will showcase high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, confocal microscopy and spinning disc microscopy to study herpesvirus nuclear egress. Wilson will present new advances in the live-cell imagining of herpesvirus lytic replication to track individually labeled viral genomes as they enter, travel through and exit the nucleoplasmic reticulum. This pathway represents a shift in how we understand herpesvirus nuclear egress.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • In-depth review of the newest advances in labeling and tracking herpesvirus capsids during lytic replication.
  • Deep dive into the dynamic morphology of the nucleoplasmic reticulum during lytic replication and analyze the organelle at 50,000x magnification.
  • Gain insight into what nuclear egress at the nucleoplasmic reticulum means for how we approach our future therapeutic drug design to inhibit lytic replication.

About the Journal

The ® (JVI) is a º£½ÇÖ±²¥ journal dedicated to publishing primary research, minireviews and other article formats that interrogate fundamental processes and structure in viruses, the mechanisms by which they interact and evolve with their host and environment, novel methodologies and therapeutic and diagnostic strategies.
